“Springing Into June” – Sunny Sumter, Executive Director

The 2017 DC JazzFest is less than 90 days away and we couldn’t be more jazzed! We have a fantastic team of DC sponsors, venue and city partners, and staff assembled to blow the festival out of the water this year. Our artistic director, Willard Jenkins, had done an exceptional job of creating diverse offerings with something for everyone. Working with some of the city’s best curators, Jenkins has meticulously arranged a smorgasbord for the jazz enthusiast as well as the casual fan. And thanks to significant funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, we are able to offer free and moderately priced concerts to serve all populations. We are expecting folks from all walks of life to party with a purpose, celebrating the diversity that jazz brings – in every corner of our city. It’s about Discovering the Unexpected! #discovertheunexpected.

We just announced the addition of Jacob Collier, one of London’s newest sensations to hit the U.S, With an exceptional rhythmic sensibility and over a million YouTube followers, Collier is a rising star who is introducing audiences worldwide to the surprise and fun of jazz. Take a listen here. Collier is one of the more than 300 musicians who will take over DC in June for our celebration of all things jazz. DC JazzFest will feature over 150 performances in 22 neighborhoods citywide as we present an incredible lineup of emerging and international artists and celebrate DC’s rich jazz legacy.

A true DC offering, our partnerships with Events DC, Destination DC, and the Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District make what we do so very possible. We’re showcasing great diversity unlike ever before, with talents from DC, across the nation, and around the world performing in both historic and new venues across Washington, DC. (Be sure to check out Artistic Director Willard Jenkins’ preview of the 2017 Festival below.)

Many other new discoveries have yet to be unveiled, but suffice it to say that the next three months are soon to be further overflowing with the sounds of revelry – as we make new announcements about the festival and dance, sing and swing in the exuberance of jazz.

2017 will be a great year, and we’re full of joy to have you aboard! Let’s get our jazz on!
