The sizzling Afro-Cuban band Cimafunk will move to District Stage at The Wharf for their Saturday, August 31 performance. Blending Afro-Cuban rhythms and magnetic funk expressions, Cimafunk continues the DC Jazz Festival tradition of introducing global music experiences.
The JoGo Project has become a certified DC sensation, blending jazz and DC’s own go-go rhythms in a very popular fusion. JoGo will kick-off the 20th anniversary DC JazzFest at noon on August 28th at Franklin Park in the heart of downtown DC for a free, funky lunchtime treat.
The JazzDC All-Stars are under the direction of pianist-composer-educator Allyn Johnson, the man the Washington City Paper declared “The Dean” of DC’s jazz scene. The free opening concert will take place at Hamilton Live on August 28. Registration is required. The JazzDC All-Stars will be joined by two special guest soloists: gifted alto saxophonist Antonio Hart and vocalist Christie Dashiell, whose meteoric career began with Howard University’s acclaimed Afro Blue vocal ensemble.
In addition to presenting jazz masters and internationally renowned touring artists, the DC JazzFest will showcase many of DC’s finest resident jazz artists including go-go favorite the Chuck Brown Band, the vocal artistry of Sharón Clark, Muneer Nasser Quintet, Reginald Cyntje, Stephen Arnold & Sea Change, the BJ Simmons Quintet, Barry Moton’s Billy Strayhorn project, special musical tributes to DC jazz legends Sonny Stitt, Donald Byrd and Kevin Toney, and much more.
The five-day DC JazzFest, kicking off August 28, promises to be a citywide takeover with over 100 concerts in more than a dozen neighborhoods. The blockbuster DC JazzFest weekend, August 31 and September 1, will be hosted on six stages at The Wharf, DC’s premier waterfront neighborhood and destination. The Wharf’s striking riverside views and bustling promenade with four hotels and more than 80 shops and restaurants are accessible by nearby Metro service, highway and water taxi service.
