The last weekend in June was a sweltering one in the nation’s capital, but in this case there was hot music to match the rising mercury. The DC Jazz Festival was celebrating its ten-year anniversary, and festival organizers won the day by pulling in some top talent from the nation’s jazz capital (New Orleans, of course) to mark the occasion.

Victor Wooten is deservedly name checked among the all-time great electric bassists. His work with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones broke new ground for the instrument and he has not stopped evolving. Wooten will be at The Birchmere tonight to lead his own band through a 7:30 p.m. set. Tickets $35.

The DC Jazz Festival has named Willard Jenkins as its new artistic director, effective Jan. 5, 2015. The writer, producer, educator, and arts administrator has focused heavily on jazz throughout the course of his long and varied career.
