Sadao Watanabe Plays the DC Jazz Festival

World renowned, Japanese saxophonist Sadao Watanabe was awarded the 2014 DC Jazz Festival Lifetime Achievement Award last night at the residence of Japanese ambassador, Kenichiro Sasae. A longtime advocate and lover of jazz music, the ambassador and his wife, Nobuko, had previously opened their home to a DC Jazz Festival Fishman Young Artist Series concert in February. Last night in his welcoming speech, Ambassador Sasae managed to rouse the crowd stating that he and his wife would like to “Welcome all of you cats to our pad (and) we really dig that you are here tonight!”

Victor Wooten is deservedly name checked among the all-time great electric bassists. His work with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones broke new ground for the instrument and he has not stopped evolving. Wooten will be at The Birchmere tonight to lead his own band through a 7:30 p.m. set. Tickets $35.
