About the JazzDC™ Residency Program

Guided by our 2023-2027 strategic plan, DCJF established the JazzDC Residency Program in 2024 to contribute to Washington, D.C., as a thriving hub for jazz creativity. Hosted at Arena Stage and other community venues across the region, the program provides a space for jazz artists to rehearse, record, perform, teach, and inspire. By empowering jazz elders, mid-career and emerging artists, and budding musicians, JazzDC elevates DC as a premier jazz destination year-round.

JazzDC™ Orchestra

At the core of JazzDC is its professional residency orchestra, led by renowned D.C. pianist and bandleader Allyn Johnson. This ensemble will perform quarterly as JazzDC’s resident jazz orchestra, showcasing top local talent while celebrating D.C.’s vibrant jazz tradition. The orchestra is complemented with a concert series and Meet the Artist conversations offering dynamic experiences that blend performance and community engagement.

JazzDC™ Youth Ensemble

DCJF also launched the JazzDC Youth Ensemble in partnership with Sitar Arts Center and the DC Youth Orchestra. Directed by Elijah Balbed, this program engages young musicians in jazz repertoire, providing mentorship, performance opportunities, and a connection to D.C.’s rich jazz heritage.

Program Highlights

  • Showcasing Talent with top-tier professional musicians and rising youth artists to celebrate D.C.’s jazz excellence.

  • Preserving and Innovating Jazz honoring D.C.’s rich jazz legacy while fostering contemporary creativity.

  • Inspiring the Next Generation connecting seasoned professionals with budding talent through mentorship and collaboration.
