Next Up: Ben Williams - Saturday 5/23
Bassist Ben Williams has more than lived up to his designation as one of DownBeat magazine’s 2016 “25 for the Future” artists. A DC native who began playing bass at years old 10, Ben continued mastering his instrument before graduating from the Duke Ellington School for the Arts. Ben later achieved advanced studies degrees from both Michigan State University and the Juilliard School. He was the winner of the Thelonious Monk International Bass Competition in 2009 and from there toured with vibraphonist Stefon Harris as well as with NEA Jazz Master Pat Metheny’s Unity Band, with whom he won his first Grammy with in 2013.
In this week’s DCJazzFest From Home Series, Ben is seen premiering his social justice project “I Am a Man,” which is the subject of his most recent record, his third as a leader. This performance was captured at the 2018 DC JazzFest at The Wharf and was the culmination of his stint as that year’s DCJF artist-in-residence. Tune in this weekend to see the performance.
