THE LEGACY CONTINUES.... The Art of Jazz Vocalese!

GEORGE V JOHNSON JR, writes lyrics about complex things: personal experiences, love, history, family, home, heaven and most of all Jazz! Phrases turn, emotions connect, melodies soar. It’s a fuel that burns full-throttle, ignited by the heat of his soulful voice and the power and passion of his performance. You sing along even though you’ve never heard the tune before. George writes from a perspective of distances, of interludes between lovers and lives and the roads that lead from small towns to big cities.

A Native Washingtonian and an award winning vocalist, lyricist, actor, playwright, producer, promoter, consultant, composer and contributing editor is one of the foremost practitioners of the Art of Jazz Vocalese, writing and singing lyrics to improvises solos of John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Hank Mobley, Sonny Rollins, Lou Donaldson, Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis and more.  His career spans over 40 years and has become the preferred vocalist with many of the top players in the music business past and present including John Malachi, Eddie Jefferson, James Moody, Pharoah Sanders, Dizzy Gillespie, Lou Donaldson, Benny Golson, Wallace Roney, Bobby Watson, Buck Hill, Jimmy Heath, Doug Lawrence, Frank Wess, Fred Foss and more.

In 2003, George V Johnson Jr. was commissioned by Don Sickler of Second Floor Music to pen lyrics to the music of jazz legend and saxophonist, Hank Mobley. Since taking on the project Johnson has skillfully, completed over 40 of Mobley’s classic compositions and still counting. Some with complete solo’s. Critics are already saying this is one of the most important and extensive projects to be presented to the public from the jazz vocalese realm in many, many years with Jazz Vocalese still in a state of infancy.  Everyone is in for a real treat!
