DC Jazz Festival Presents World Premiere from MBowie and the Blast

WASHINGTON, DC- JUNE 23, 2017- The DC Jazz Festival (DC JazzFest) and Atlas PAC present Michael Bowie & the Blast for the world premiere of You Haven't Done Nothin' (YHDN) at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, Wednesday, June 28 at 7:30 PM. DC bassist and musical director, Michael Bowie will bring artists and audience together in a dynamic, multimedia "live video" performance exploring themes of social justice, freedom, and the human toll on oppression.  

 

Utilizing some of DC's finest musicians and dancers, YHDN will channel a diverse America in which public demonstration and fundamental freedoms are a right for all people. YHDN will examine the civic right to publicly demonstrate, inviting diverse artists and audiences from all walks of life to be part of the musical discourse.  "The sociopolitical climate is rife with overt and undercurrent issues, all of which can bring musicians together to make a positive difference," said YDHN musical director Michael Bowie.   

 

The multi-media performance project will include jazz, hip hop, dance, and film. Audience members will be invited to participate in the live taping.

 

The video will be made available online publicly and distributed to organizations including Americans for the Arts, ArtChangeUS: Arts in a Changing America, JazzCorner.com, The Recording Academy, and AfroPunk.

About the Musical Director: Michael Bowie is an internationally recognized musician, performing on both the electric and contrabass with roots in the Washington D.C. jazz and gospel community. Bowie is a recipient of the National Endowment of the Arts Award in Jazz Studies. He formally trained with renowned jazz vocalist Betty Carter and bassist Keter Betts and has expanded his musical interests and performance to include a wide variety of musical forms from jazz to symphony to rock. As a musical director and recording artist, Bowie has worked with many artists worldwide including Patti Labelle, James Ingram, Abbey Lincoln, Angie Stone, Isaac Hayes, Sarah Vaughn, Joe Williams, Abbey Lincoln, Manhattan Transfer, Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, Michel Camilo and Ricky Skaggs. He is a DC public school teacher and directs the Blues Alley Youth Orchestra.
